Community Tourism around Lalibela

Tesfa is a local charity encouraging and working with a local eco minded community in North Wollo Mountains near Lalibela to develop facilities for visitors for those keen trekkers wishing to explore the breath taking scenery, real culture of the highlanders around Lalibela. Trekking camps have already been organized in Meket Woreda by the community assisted by Tesfa. The communities have built Tukuls ( round thatched house), equipped with beds, clean bed sheet, blankets and towels at the camping sites including Mequet(Meket),Wajela, Ataro and Yidikulay.

Danakil Region
The Danakil or Dalol depression with several points lying more than 100m below sea level the Danakil is officially listed as one of the hottest and most inhospitable place on earth with an average temperature of 34-35oC.The continents lowest point dipping -116 below sea level at Dalol near lake Asale is also found in the Danakil region of the Rift Valley. One of the driest and most tectonically active areas on the planet, the Danakil is an area of singular geological fascination: a strange lunar land escape studded with active volcanoes, sulphur-caked hot springs, solidified black lava flows and salt incrusted basins.

The Rock hewn churches of Tigray

Practically unknown to other Ethiopians –let alone the out side world -before 1966 the rock hewn churches of Tigray have been described by Ivy Pearce as “the greatest of the historical cultural heritage of the Ethiopian people”. Most of them are still in active use as center of worship and prayer. Many have paintings and medieval artifacts. These churches primarily don’t function as tourist attractions. Almost half of these churches have gone unseen by foreigners because the Tigraian churches are more scattered and less accessible than their counterparts at Lalibela.

Attraction sights between Axum and Adigrat

There are many places of interest and attractions along the way to Adigrat situated 122kms from Axum the second largest town of Tigrai. Some of the known destinations include the ruins of Yeha Temple, the town of Adwa and the mountains where the Italians were defeated in 1896, and the ancient cliff top monastery of Debre Damo founded by Abuna Aregawi one of the nine saints who had arrived from Roman Empire.
