The other unique festival falling on September 27 is Meskal which celebrates the discovery of the true cross by St.Helena, the wife of Emperor Constantine the great. Bonfires are built topped by a cross to which flowers are tied, most commonly meskal daisy. After the bonfires are blessed, they are lit and dancing and singing begins around them. Addis Ababa, Gondar and Axum are considered the best places to be on Meskal.
